Happy Halloween!
My son and I finalized his ghost costume tonight. I'll try to get a picture tomorrow. And the pumpkins were carved and arranged in the vignette you see below.
Blogger is smooshing the original some so all I can say is the original is clearer that this. But at least you can see the handiwork of my son -- It was his idea to add the little dead pumpkin in the bowl. He and I agreed the big one looked nauseous and so needed the barf.Have a safe and happy halloween!
P.S. The Next Historical is being knifed and shredded and the various bits reassembled, rejiggered and re-engineered to make a creature that is new and awesome to behold. I hope to soon be shouting to the belfry "it's alive!!" But right now, not so much. Right now, it's Frankenbook, frightening those who dare to look and sending the good Dr. Carolyn von FrankenNeuroticWriter into fits of chocolate overindulgence.

The Awesome Post of Awesomeness
FICTION: SCI-FI/FANTASY
George Martin and Gardner Dozois, eds.'s STAR CROSSED LOVERS, a cross-genre anthology of fantasy and romance, with contributions by New York Times bestselling authors Diana Gabaldon, Jo Beverley, Carrie Vaughn and others, to Jennifer Heddle at Pocket, in a very nice deal, for publication in 2010, by Kay McCauley at The Pimlico Agency (NA).
I assume the George Martin is George R.R. Martin, who has brilliantly edited in the past. But seriously, Jo Beverley!!! OMG SQUEEE!!!! I've heard the Diana chick is pretty good, too.
I thought I did pretty good in the quizzes I recently took while I wasn't procrastinating. Especially in the How Long Would You Survive in a Horror Film but there is a Queen among us: I give you, The Horror Schwab.
The other awesome thing today is I finally made it to my PO Box to check for mail, which I do religiously the 15th of every month or as soon thereafter as I remember at the same time I have time and am somewhere near, and there was a letter from a young woman I met on MySpace who hasn't got a lot of money, so I sent her a copy of Shards of Crimson and then recently My Wicked Enemy, too, because I remember being young and having $7.00 be a fortune. She wrote me the nicest thank you letter and included a poem she wrote, too. When you don't have a lot of money, that means you walk, bike, take the bus (if you can afford it) or bum a ride everywhere you need to go. Getting to the library may not always be easy, I should point out, and depending on your city and where you live (if you don't have a lot of money, chances are you don't live close to amenities like grocery stores or libraries) -- well, you see my point, I hope.
Awesome letter and poem!

Author Interview: Jeff Rivera
How did you come up with the title, Forever My Lady?
Well, the main character Dio has this thing he always says to the love of his life in Spanish, which is basically, "No matter what, Forever." That means no matter what they'll be together. It's almost something he says as a guilt trip because I think on some level he knows she's slipping away from him slowly but surely. But in his heart of hearts Jennifer will always be forever his lady. How similar would you say you are to your main characters?
Very similar in many ways but other ways not at all. Even Dio, the gang member is similar to me, although I've never been in a gang. I know how he feels about love and about abandonment and about longing for someone. Jennifer is on the other end of the spectrum where she feels obligated to be with someone though her heart and head are telling her to go into two different directions.
One of your supporting characters Simon is interesting. He's a biracial kid who's ashamed of himself so much that he adapts and changes, like a cautionary tale. Why did you create that character?
He's based on someone I know and also me. I know the pressure of feeling obligated to fit into a stereotype of who you're supposed to be based on how you look on the outside. I think it's an important message and something that a lot of people can relate to.

Did you receive any rejections when sending out Forever My Lady? How did you keep going?
Rejections? Are you kidding? Who DIDN'T reject Forever My Lady? Haha. I was just grateful that the wonderful people at Grand Central really "got" the story and gave it a chance when others hadn't.
Where can readers get a copy of Forever My Lady?
They can pick up a copy at any local bookstore, Amazon.com or my website: www.jeffrivera.com

All About Carolyn (or clever ways to procrastinate)
Your result for Howard Gardner's Eight Types of Intelligence Test...
Linguistic
47% Logical, 16% Spatial, 71% Linguistic, 12% Intrapersonal, 27% Interpersonal, 16% Musical, 27% Bodily-Kinesthetic and 31% Naturalistic!

"Verbal-linguistic intelligence has to do with words, spoken or written. People with verbal-linguistic intelligence display a facility with words and languages. They are typically good at reading, writing, telling stories and memorizing words and dates. They tend to learn best by reading, taking notes, listening to lectures, and via discussion and debate. They are also frequently skilled at explaining, teaching and oration or persuasive speaking. Those with verbal-linguistic intelligence learn foreign languages very easily as they have high verbal memory and recall, and an ability to understand and manipulate syntax and structure.
Careers which suit those with this intelligence include writers, lawyers, philosophers, journalists, politicians and teachers." (Wikipedia)

Your result for The Awesome Test of Awesomeness....
Awesomely Scary
47% Scary, 33% Respected and 20% Cool!

It looks like Scary was your greatest variable! You are awesome like a Greek God, unpredicatable, powerful, generally terrifying... but in a good way! You might frequently lust for awesomeness. You probably surround yourself with loyal subjects, people who you can shower with the effects of your own awesome nature. They need you. You are Awesome!
Your result for How Long Would you Survive in a Horror Film?...
Hero/Heroine
60% chance of survival!

This character is usually female, tall, dark haired, and virginal. The heroine is never a part of the scene with the requisite horror movie nudity, and she uses her wits to defeat the monster/killer in the end, though, of course, he never really dies. She is the person that will undoubtedly last through the whole movie, because she is probably the first character introduced and the only one with unabashedly perfect moral values and in immense force of will. However, if brought back in a sequel her acquired knowledge of said villain may get her killed (See: The Horror Aficionado).
Heroes/Heroines you could learn something from: Ben, Night of the Living Dead; Peter, Dawn of the Dead; Laurie Strode, Halloween; and Ash, Evil Dead I, Dead II, and Army of Darkness.
Please remember to rate, but more importantly, please message me if you've found any blatant errors (especially with the results page and links). Thanks!

Your result for The Lover Style Profile Test...
The Liberated Lover
82% partner focus, 52% aggressiveness, 55% adventurousness

You prefer your romance and love to wild and daring rather than typical or boring, you would rather pursue than be pursued and, when it comes to physical love, your satisfaction comes more from providing a wonderful time to your partner than simply seeking your own.
This places you in the Lover Style of: The Liberated Lover.
The Liberated Lover is a wonderful Lover Style, and forms the kind of free-thinking, sexually-exciting, self-confident lover that society once condemned but that a liberal-mind cherishes and exults. The Liberated Lover is a treasure to find, though it can sometimes be difficult to do so because they are often already engaged in relationships or are in high-demand if "in the market."
In terms of physical love, the Liberated Lover is possibly the most thrilling and demanding of all, with the one potential drawback being that it is possible to feel 'overmatched' at times by their prowess and selfless giving. Given trust and understanding, and the right lover, the Liberated Lover can be a delight in bed.
Best Compatibility can probably be found with: The Exotic Lover (most of all) or the Carnal Lover, or the Suave Lover.
Congratulations!
If you enjoyed this test, I would love the feedback! Also, you might want to check out some of my other tests if you're interested in the following:
Nerds, Geeks & Dorks
Professional Wrestling
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
America/Politics

Good news!
So if you're reading this on Friday, October 24, click on over and go oohh and ahhhh! If you say to yourself that you must now rush out and buy My Wicked Enemy you should way go do that. Or check it out from the library or something.
I'm told the picks are made by a group of readers and have nothing to do with advertising or anything. So, hey, they picked my book! That's pretty darn awesome.

Sometimes Paranoia is Justified
There be monsters there.
Monsters in the form of really old chapters that don't reflect the current story. Which makes me feel like my actual word count is something more like 50,000 which is a panic number. Ack! Ack! Carolyn running around panicking
I continue forward into this unknown country from which this writer may never return, ready to fight monsters with my trusty... er... keyboard, delete, backspace, select-all delete, undo, redo, and
q w e r t y u i o p a s d f g h j k l z x c v b n m(but not necessarily in that order, plus there will be lots of repetition of the little buggers, hopefully in new and sparkly combinations)
K. That's how I'm feeling. And now, for a quickie post of good news. In the next post. Not this one!

Catching up is hard to do
Ah. You Tube, how I missed you. No new AuthorTalk vids but I watched the man-slave episode a few times, and then some others because I way needed the laughs. And then Jill Monroe actually friended me on Facebook. Squeeee!! And then she even messaged me! We are now BFF forever, I can feel it.
Anyway, yesterday, the page proofs for Scandal arrived and since there was no soccer, I was able to get through the entire book in a day and return the fixes.
Of course that meant I wasn't working on The Next Historical but I did get some stuff done last night. Today there was soccer so I didn't get as much done as I wanted to. And, as it happens, I ended up cutting more than I wrote. But the dreck needs to go and that's what happened. Tomorrow, I think I need to whack a whole chapter or else figure out where it needs to go. Right now it's totally in the wrong place. But I'm up to chapter 16 in this unbelievably slow process of fixing stuff. Painfully, painfully slow.
I'm anxious to get to the back half of the book which is good because I'm finally feeling my hero and heroine the way I need to. The emotional points are starting to pull together. And I know what I need to do. What I don't know is how many existing chapters need to bite the dust. I suspect a lot of them. Way a lot.
Anyhow, tomorrow I am doing the day job from home because they sprang for a wireless card with decent enough speed to actually work from home. Satellite is way not fast enough. So, we'll see. My son doesn't have school tomorrow, but he's catching up on 10 days of no World of Warcraft, so I don't expect he'll be out of bed much before noon. I will be getting up at the usual time but without the driving to work bit, I should be done with the EDJ by 2:00 or so.
We shall see. Wish me luck.

To the person in my house who bought an off-brand brand of graham crackers
Now someone has to go to the store and buy REAL graham crackers.
Internet is still out but scheduled to be repaired tomorrow between 3 and 5. Pray for us. The situation is dire. Many of us are showing signs of deprivation. Subject 1 has been wandering around picking up old emails (printed out) and sobbing quietly. I have myself observed Subject 2 attempting to make up stupid jokes. It's painful enough when someone thinks over-circulated jokes are funny, but when said subject resorts to making them up?
Mostly we wander around the house aimlessly, wondering if friends in far flung places think we're ignoring them on purpose.
How did we live before You Tube or Weather Bug? What if I estimate it's 65 outside when really it's 66? And what if I think tomorrow is going to be pretty much like today only actually there's a hurricane coming? Or a rogue cloud bank?
The Next Historical is progressing. That's about all I can say.
Sob
Without my iPhone, I would be in a sad sad place indeed.

Reporting In
I'm reserving judgment on the third. But I am not a happy camper.
What else. Um. Still working away on The Next Historical.
Seemed like there was more stuff than that, but I'm so depressed (sob!) over all the stuff I cannot do because there's no real internet here, that I just can't think about it.
Sigh

Rant Alert - It's Double Down today!
Here, at Writer's Diary, I have an entirely NEW rant!
First off, I pay my parent's bills. So today, I see an AT&T notice confirming a change in service of the local toll and long distance carrier, for which, by the way, they are charging $1.57. I go, WTF?
So I called AT&T and gave them the polite version of WTF? and it seems somehow, mysteriously, the local toll and long distance was changed to a company whose name is, uhm, Evil Company That Rips off Senior Citizens. There is also a charge on their credit card for $47.72 from ECTRSC. $50 for long distance?
My parents call my brother in Santa Barbara sometimes, maybe once or month or so - because check it: my mom IM's with my brother all the time. (Only not right now, because, well, go read the GCP post.) Once or twice a year they might call some relatives in Oregon. All the other kids and relatives they still speak to are local. Not even a toll call.
WTF?? That's just so evil I can't stand it. My mother can't hear, and has been hearing impaired since she was 10 or so. Sometimes phone conversations with her are either hellaciously funny or frustrating. No one involved in the call as the same conversation. So I'm just guessing what probably happened.
Evilness people. Evilness. This, my friends, is what comes of deregulation. You cannot have a market that operates without any regulation because that just means all the cheats and liars lie and cheat with impunity.
I'm getting totally peeved right now. So -- deep breath.
In other news, I should be writing.
In other other news, Sabine, my heroine just got a really bad haircut and color. I'm just going with this dang story. Harems, rapacious pashas, Alexander The Great's defeat of Darius at the Gates of Syria, bad haircuts and cross-dressing. I tell you The Next Historical has it all.
Sigh

Things that irriate me
In other news, my son took this career assessment test and apparently his number one job is a Thoroughbred Trainer. He has NO interest in horses and when he was given the opportunity to work with the neighbor's thoroughbreds a while back, he was a big fat no when asked. His comment about his Number One career: Horses? But they're like big and stuff.
Thoroughbred trainer? Only horse nuts ever become trainers for crying out loud! Why would anyone in their right mind suggest a non-horse nut should become a horse trainer? He could also be a a Park Ranger. (Great, he'll get shot by some pot farmer in Humboldt County) or a vet's assistant. Let's see, he's an honor student and off the charts in most of his math assessments. And he should be a Vet assistant? He hates math, however. So exactly why isn't the school telling him about jobs he could have that would speak to his mathematical skills? There are things that he'd be good at without even having to work hard.
Oh dear. I'm getting hot under the collar again. I'm sorry.
I'm going to go get some work done.
