Random to Press Plagiarism Claims - 4/25/2006 - Publishers Weekly

So is this actual plagiarism? What is meant by "Mirroring"?? Words? Structuire? Tone of voice? Are they implying she's such a good writer that when she read McCafferty's works and then sat down to write on her own she inadvertently did some sort of perfect imitation? Or is it the much worse thing from the title? Given how "packaged" she was, this whole thing is sounding really fishy to me. Are they worried because this happened when she was in High School and presumably a minor? I'd really like the whole story. Can the woman write or not?

She got a $500K advance? Does that mean if I lift some stuff from Lisa Kleypas I can command that kind of money, too?

There's a lot of lying in fiction these days. Almost as bad as journalism.
Probably it means you'd go to jail because your publisher didn't give you a big enough advance to bother. Publishers Lunch had a much more detailed article. The alleged similarities identified were structure, character, etc. But some weirdness, too. Like, same plot point happening on the same page. But how can that be anything the "author" can control? That's typesetting and layout. Is this really the packager's fault?
More interesting, she shares the copyright with a book packager, Alloy Entertainment, before she sold to Little, Brown.

Book packagers "help" writers create their work. So how much is really hers and how much is someone else's?

That's very interesting. Shared copyright, shared liability, right? Book packagers don't always help create the work, though. But imho they do rip off authors by taking rights and monies that would otherwise belong solely to the author.

The more I read about this, the more I keep seeing Alloy handing her the McCafferty books and saying, here, write from this template....
