It's Wrong To Base A Novel On Research?

Interesting article here. I'm linking to the TechDirt article rather than the source because the UK source (Guardian) is plastered with annoying and irritating ads. Ick. So, click through from TechDirt if you dare. At any rate, the article seems to be saying they want a piece of Dan Brown for having researched his novel using their non-fiction (i.e, true stuff!!). This is about greed, folks. I'm starting to feel sorry for Brown.

Comments:
Hmm ... The problem might be that Brown used The Holy Blood & the Holy Grail to such an extent that if you know Baignent and Leigh's book you don't need to read Brown's because you know from the beginning what the big secret is.

Still, I wonder why they start sueing now and why they didn't do that much earlier. *shrug*

It's definitely iffy. To say the least.

Iffy for sure. What happens to all the historical novels in the world if you can't base your facts on -- er, the facts? I mean, for crying out loud, the Napoleonic wars have a certain factual progression that makes it inherently interesting. Just because Rory Muir wrote a great book about the Defeat of Napoleon doesn't mean I can't write about the Iberian war.

Well, there so often facts that come out later that make people say, OH! Well, if I'd known that, I would have said she was crook too. But still...
