horrible thought - Great review

Just had a horrible thought which is that it's getting to be the end of September and that means the October issue of RT, which will have reviews for November books, will be out soon. With, presumably, a review of A Darker Crimson in it. Arhg! or maybe that should be Sigh. Ok, I have seen one review of ADC. I've had it in my email for about a week I guess. I don't know why I can't bring myself to say anything about it. See, it's that old, dodged a bullet thing. Sure, that one missed, but I bet the rest will kill me. OK, it's a really good review. Really.

Good Review!

From Romance Reviews Today Review by Sinclair Reid

A DARKER CRIMSON is a fast-paced, attention-grabbing, action-packed hell of ride into the unknown demon world. Claudia is a tough-as-nails cop and a loving mother all rolled into one. She will fight to the death for her daughter without a second thought. Tiber is a vampire with money, power, and ambition. He makes a deal with Jaise behind the leader of the vampire's back, and it seems it might not have been a good choice. Especially when Claudia and her young daughter, Holly, are brought into the picture. Tiber's developing feelings for Claudia throw a monkey wrench into the mix as he's not sure what to do about them. Of course, every time Claudia calls him "Fang" or a monster, then it becomes crystal clear...steer clear of Claudia. The chemistry between Tiber and Claudia is intense, emotional, and simmers just beneath the surface, adding another level to the dangerous situation they are in. Another ingredient added into the turbulent mixture is Lath, the Bak-Faru demon who happens to be Claudia's vishtau mate. He wants nothing to do with Claudia, but the connection of the vishtau soon captures them in its grip and neither can fight it.

Ok. I'll go post this on my website,

Bit of a late reply but this sounds like a good review - positive vibes flowing your way! I'm waiting (im)patiently for A Darker Crimson to come out - November's so far away *sigh*. Anyway, congrats on the review - may they all be good/ lacking snarkiness.

Yes, it is a very good review! And thanks for your nice and encouraging thoughts. Every little bit helps to stave off the writing demons. (Worse than the Bak-Faru!) Hah! Crimson City humor!

I don't think your book deserves a good review. In my opinion your book has a grave injustice in it by murdering the demon Lath for doing something any other self-respecting demon would have done for his vishtau mate who can't keep her hands off of a vamp. Got rid of the vamp. She shouldn't have mated with him if she didn't want him. Don't demons have rights?

The vishtau bond works both ways, but less thoroughly on humans. Thus, Claudia was compelled to mate with Lath, too, even though her heart belonged to Tiber. Considering that Lath was trying to kill (however understandably) the man she loved, I don't see that Claudia had much choice. There is the further issue, of course, that Lath deliberatly gave Claudia a clear shot at him -- because he had decided he would rather be dead than live without her. As to the rights of demons, you bring up an interesting point. And the answer is No! That's the whole problem with Crimson City right now. The issue of the civil rights of non-humans has resulted in much the same unrest and unfair treatment as the US before the civil rights movement. Highly ironic, I'm sure you'll agree.

Stepping now into the real world, I never wanted to kill off Lath. I resisted it until the very very very last. In the MS I sent to my editor, Lath survived the book. But everyone who read it said Lath had to die. And then Chris Keeslar, my editor, said Lath had to die, too. That's a battle he won. So you should email him about your disappointment. You can find their webiste at www.dorchesterpub.com Let him know just how wrong he was to make me kill Lath!

P.S. To anyone who wonders, snarkily or not, whether I am aware of just how compelling a character I wrote in Lath, the answer is YES. I knew all along and I did it on purpose. And you can read that as snarky or not, as you wish.
