Writer's Diary

Sunday, February 20, 2005

Well, I'm still fighting with my WIP, but in a different spot. I have sworn to fix this one particular part tonight. I will but I want to digress. See next paragraph.

My personal opinion: If you are a published author, you should not publicly engage in reviewing/critiquing the books of other authors writing in your genre. This includes remarks on email lists, by the way, particularly ones that can be googled. Even if you sincerely believe the book is the worst thing you ever read, why risk having that opinion be interpreted as trashing a competitor's work? Oh, maybe that's what it is. (Anyone reading between the lines here?) Publish a book and of course an author opens herself to comments from the public, kind and unkind. But if you are an author posting reviews and commentary on the merits of books in the very same genre in which you write, how is that not a conflict of interest?

Comments:
Can we have a hint about who this might be? (big hopeful grin) Though I never indulge in gossip, of course....
